The New CEO

Resources for RRA Consultants - Internal Use Only

How do world-leading CEOs approach their first year in the job?

What did they do first? What do they wish they’d done differently? And what advice do they have for the next generation of CEOs?

In The New CEO, Ty Wiggins and his contributing partners Justus O'Brien, Laura Sanderson, Margot McShane, Rusty O'Kelley and Stephen Langton offer a backstage pass for clients on nailing the first year as CEO—whether it’s their first, second, or third time in the role.

What is the book about?

The book explores how new CEOs can successfully transition into the role. It looks at how they can successfully navigate their first 12-18 months and lay the foundations for their long-term success. The book is based on original research with 200+ CEOs globally, as well as candid conversations with CEOs from Verizon, PepsiCo, Campbell’s, UPS, Whirlpool, and more.

Readers will learn:

  • Why CEO transitions are so hard, including the loneliness of the role, the scope of responsibilities, and the increasing complexity of the job.

  • How to address 10 key milestones during their transition, including how to:

    • Develop a solid transition plan

    • Engage the board

    • Build and lead your top team

    • Address your culture

    • Overcome setbacks

    • Communicate effectively

    • Set your priorities

Please head to our The New CEO microsite for more information.

Who should read it?

The book is relevant to all CEOs—whether they a first-time CEOs or seasoned ones—across industries and ownerships, including PE and family-owned offices. The lessons are also relevant to C-suite executives, aspiring CEOs, and anyone who regularly works with CEOs, including board members, in-house counsel, consultants, and PE firms.

Why did we write this book?

For all the attention on CEOs, there is very little written about how CEOs can successfully navigate their transition period. This book aims to plug the gap in the market, and position Russell Reynolds Associates as a trusted advisor to CEOs globally (see below for the scale of the business opportunity).

This book is an ideal read for CEOs in the first year in the job. Using BoardX data, Marketing has built a list of global CEOs new-to-role since June 2023, so they all can receive a copy of the book being RRA clients or not (yet).

What will Marketing provide for local offices?

Marketing will be distributing a set number of books to RRA offices for this BD effort, along with branded The New CEO personal note cards for local offices to send.

What were the criteria to build this list?

We have compiled a list of new CEOs from your region/industry, sourced from BoardEx, covering new global appointments from private and public companies, mid-cap ($2-10B market valuation) from June 2023 through April 2024. These lists have been shared with HLs ahead of launch.

Where can I access these CEO lists?

We ask that PCs track book shipments in CIT to ensure that all CEOs are sent a book with no overlap. If you have any trouble updating the program in CIT, contact the Marketing team (marketing@russellreynolds.com).

What are the expected costs to ship books to clients?

We cannot anticipate shipping costs as these may vary depending on customs clearance. Please contact your local postage service to calculate costs. For reference, please find book specifications below:

Item weight: 1.74 pounds

Sale price: $30 USD

Who’s paying for this?

Marketing has purchased a limited number of books to be distributed globally. Marketing will cover the cost of these books and printing branded note cards. Local offices are responsible for the cost of shipping books to offices and shipping to clients locally. Offices are also responsible for the cost of additional books + shipping if requested.

Your regional marketer will put you in contact with our book distribution vendor, Book Highlight, for book shipment invoicing.

When will the book be available in my office?

The New CEO launches on May 7, 2024, but availability of the book will depend on shipment times. We will send a limited number of books to RRA offices for BD and event opportunities. Book copies will be shipped to RRA offices during book launch week.

Where can I direct my clients to purchase books?

Direct clients to The New CEO microsite to purchase books in bulk (10 or more). For orders of less than 10 books, the book can be purchased from a retailer of choice, such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, or Bookshop.

Where can local offices store books?

Local offices are responsible for book storage. Please contact your local office manager or coordinator to facilitate.

How can my office request extra books?

Contact the Marketing team (marketing@russellreynolds.com) to request an order for additional books. Please include the date of the event and the number of books requested. Limited books are available with requests considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional books are available for purchase.

What is the business opportunity for RRA?

This book will act as a door-opener to CEO conversations at the exact moment they need advice. By helping CEOs navigate their rocky first months and years, we build trusted and long-lasting relationships with this critical audience.

The New CEO will build awareness of RRA’s advisory capabilities, showcasing our expertise in the Transition, Assessment, and Development realms. This book will also build the personal brands of our BCAP book partners—Laura Sanderson, Rusty O’Kelley, Margot McShane, and Stephen Langton—unlocking new opportunities to build our books of business with CEOs globally.
