Technological change has steadily climbed the leadership agenda over the past three years, rising from 32% of leaders selecting it as a top-five factor in late 2022 to 63% in H1 2026, making it the top organizational health lever globally for the first time since the Global Leadership Monitor launched.

At the same time, uncertain economic growth has moderated somewhat after dominating the rankings for the past several years, while the availability of key talent and skills has steadily declined from its 2023 peak. Geopolitical uncertainty has remained volatile across waves but surged sharply again in H1 2026. Workforce transformation, introduced in H2 2024, has rebounded into the top five after dipping throughout 2025, reflecting growing organizational focus on AI-enabled workforce evolution.

Leadership preparedness for technological change rebounded notably in H1 2026 after several years of decline, rising 7PP in the past six months to 51%. However, preparedness still remains below earlier highs observed in 2021 and 2022.

Preparedness to address uncertain economic growth has stabilized somewhat after several years of decline, while preparedness for geopolitical uncertainty remains persistently low despite rising prioritization. Preparedness for the availability of key talent and skills improved by 5PP in the past six months but remains below historical levels, underscoring the continued gap between organizational priorities and leadership readiness.

What is the Global Leadership Monitor?

The Global Leadership Monitor is Russell Reynolds Associates’ bi-annual survey of global business leaders, tracking key factors impacting organizational health and leaders’ preparedness to face them.

What are global business leaders most focused on in 2026?

In our H1 2026 survey of more than 2,700 leaders globally, senior business leaders cited the following top factors impacting organizational health in the next 12-18 months:

  • Technological change (63%)
  • Uncertain economic growth (57%)
  • Geopolitical uncertainty (54%)
  • Availability of key talent and skills (43%)
  • Workforce transformation (37%)

Are global business leaders prepared for tech change in 2026?

Leadership preparedness to address tech change rose notably in the last six months, increasing from 44% to 51%. Even so, nearly half of leaders still do not feel prepared to address one of the most significant factors impacting organizational health today. Most leaders view tech change as an opportunity rather than a threat, but relatively few feel their organizations possess the strengths needed to fully capitalize on it.

Are global business leaders prepared for economic uncertainty in 2026?

Uncertain economic growth remains one of the most significant factors impacting organizational health globally, though it fell to the number two position after ranking as the top concern throughout 2024 and 2025. Preparedness remains steady, with 40% of leaders saying they feel prepared to address economic uncertainty.

Are global business leaders prepared for geopolitical uncertainty in 2026?

Geopolitical uncertainty experienced the largest increase of any factor in the last six months, rising 11 percentage points globally. Despite this growing importance, only 32% of leaders report feeling prepared to address geopolitical uncertainty, in line with preparedness six months ago.

Are global business leaders prepared for the availability of key talent and skills in 2026?

Concern around the availability of key talent and skills continues to decline, falling from a peak of 71% of leaders selecting it as a top organizational health factor in H1 2023 to 43% in H1 2026. Preparedness has improved slightly in the past six months, rising from 35% to 40%, though leaders still associate talent and skills gaps more with threat, concern, uncertainty, or overwhelm (74%) than opportunity, excitement, or confidence (41%).

How are leaders approaching workforce transformation in 2026?

Workforce transformation entered the top five factors impacting organizational health for the second time in two years. Unlike many other factors, leaders are more likely to view workforce transformation as an opportunity rather than a threat, with preparedness rebounding to the same level as this time last year at 39%.
