The number of organizations looking externally for experienced CFOs has more than doubled since H1 2019 to 73% in H1 2025. Of those appointed to the CFO role who were first-timers, none were external hires. In a market where economic uncertainty has become the norm, organizations are increasingly prioritizing CFOs with proven experience.

In H1 2025, FTSE 100 retirement rates reached a seven-year high, increasing by 36 percentage points year over year. With demand for experienced CFOs also reaching a seven-year high, we can expect a continued supply and demand problem and a competitive market when it comes to recruiting experienced CFOs.
