Rich Fields has extensive experience advising public company boards and corporate leaders on corporate governance, ESG, stakeholder engagement, activist preparedness and defense, and board succession. Rich is based in Boston. Rich joined Russell Reynolds Associates from King & Spalding, where he was a partner. In that role, he advised companies on complex, high-stakes corporate governance issues such as how to effectively engage with critical outside constituencies including institutional holders, issue advocates, proxy advisors, and ESG raters and rankers. Before that, Rich was a partner at corporate governance boutique Tapestry Networks where he led programs and projects for lead directors and the chairs of boards and board committees. A sought-out author and speaker, Fields is the national chair for the Society for Corporate Governance’s 2021 Conference, has authored chapters on corporate governance in each edition of The Handbook of Board Governance and was one of the principal architects of the SDX Protocol, a guide for shareholder engagement supported by investors today representing more than $20 trillion in assets under management. He was also one of four global winners of the Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership’s Rising Star of Corporate Governance Award in 2015.
Rich graduated with a BA in government studies from Clark University, magna cum laude, and holds a JD with honors from the University of Chicago Law School. He has also completed the SASB FSA Credential Level I Candidate certification.
