Insurance Executive Moves | Q3 2023

AMERICAS

AIG 

  • Christopher Schaper, currently CEO of AIG Re, has been named Global CUO of AIG. 
  • Sabra Purtill has been announced as Global CFO, after 6 months of performing the role on an-interim basis. 
  • Edward Dandridge joins AIG as Chief Marketing & Communications Officer. He most recently served as President of ScaleWith, a social impact technology company. 
  • Lucy Fato, General Counsel & Global Head of Communications and Government Affairs for AIG will assume a newly created role as Vice Chair, reporting to Chairman and CEO Peter Zaffino. Rose Marie Glazer, EVP and Chief Human Resources and Diversity Officer, is serving as interim General Counsel and Head of Government Affairs, while Jennifer Silane, Chief of Staff to the Chairman & CEO of AIG, will serve as interim Head of Global Communications. Both roles are in addition to their current responsibilities until permanent successors are named.

Arch  

  • Jonathan Schriber has been hired at Arch Reinsurance, part of Arch Capital Group as its new President. He joins from Partner Re, where he was CUO for Americas P&C.

AXIS  

  • Lauren Kent is appointed as President, AXIS Re International. Ms. Kent will report to Ann Haugh, CEO of AXIS Re and will be part of the reinsurance executive team.

Chubb 

  • Michael O'Donnell has been appointed COO Global Reinsurance from his prior role of Division President of Chubb Tempest Re USA. 

Everest  

  • Charlie Higham is promoted to SVP, Head of Everest Underwriting Partners from his prior role of Head of Financial and Professional Lines. He succeeds Brian Drum who has retired. 
  • Don Good is appointed as the Chief Information Security Officer at Everest Re Group. Effective June 2023, leaving his prior role of Managing Director, Cyber Security at EY.
  • Melissa McDermott joins Everest Insurance as Global Chief Actuary. Most recently she was Chief Actuary, North America General Insurance for AIG.

Hanover Insurance Group

  • Arthur Barrett is promoted to President of Programs, from his prior role as Vice President of Underwriting for its programs business.
  • Stephanie Seibold has been promoted to President of Alternative Markets. 
  • Charles F. Hamann has been named as President of Small Commercial.

Liberty Mutual  

  • Jim MacPhee is named COO at Liberty Mutual. He has been appointed internally and had the role of Division President previously.
  • Hamid Mirza is named Division President of US Retail Markets at Liberty Mutual. He has been appointed internally and previously held the role of Division President, Global US Retail Markets.

Lincoln  

  • Jared Nepa has been named SVP and Head of Life and MoneyGuard distribution at Lincoln Financial Group, a newly created role. 

Manulife  

  • Maryscott (Scotty) Greenwood has been appointed as Global Head of Government Relations for Manulife. She was previously the CEO of the Canadian American Business Council. 
  • Phil Witherington is appointed as President & CEO at Manulife Asia replacing Damien Green, who will now chair Manulife Financial Asia.

Marsh  

  • Marsh has announced the appointment of Charles Williamson as CEO of Victor. He succeeds Brian Hanuschak, who has been named Chairman of Victor effective 01 August 2023.
  • Marsh has appointed Angela Duca as Global Head of Credit Specialties and Member of Marsh Specialty’s Global Executive Committee.
  • Marsh has announced the appointment of Pat Donnelly as President, Marsh Specialty and Global Placement.

Metlife  

  • MetLife’s CIO Steven Goulart has retired by end of August. He is also president of MetLife Investment Management. John McCallion, CFO at Metlife, and has taken over MetLife Investment Management leadership. Marlene Debel, CRO at Metlife, is leading MetLife Insurance Investments and Ramy Tadros, currently regional president of MetLife’s U.S. business, and has taken over the lead of MetLife Holdings from Steven Goulart.

USAA  

  • Tom Troy has been appointed Chief Transformation Officer at USAA. He joins from CSAA Insurance Group, where he served as President and CEO, successfully leading transformative initiatives and returning the company to profitability. 

Voya Financial

  • Brannigan Thompson, a 23-year veteran of Voya’s HR team, has been appointed as EVP and Chief Human Resources Officer at Voya Financial, effective August 16, where he will be responsible for overseeing Human Resources, Corporate Responsibility, and Voya Foundation. 

W.R. Berkley

  • Liberatore Lannarone joins W.R. Berkley as General Counsel from Parter Re, where he held the role of General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer.

APAC 

New China Life Insurance

  • Yang Yucheng has been named as New China Life Insurance new chairman following the retirement of Li Quan.

Ping An  

  • Michael Guo Xioatao is named as Co-CEO of Ping An Group. Incumbent Jessica Tan has resigned for personal reasons but remains on the board of directors until December. Mr Guo was most recently CHRO. 

QBE  

  • Peter Burton is promoted to Group CUO at QBE, from his prior role as Executive Director - International Markets. 

Sompo  

  • Dr. Cornelia Röskau  has been named as CEO of Sompo's European legal entity Sompo International Insurance. She will succeed Thomas Brazil as he relocates to Switzerland to take on a new role as Head of Strategic Implementation, Continental Europe Insurance.
  • Daniel Englberger has been appointed as COO of Sompo International. Previously, he held several executive positions at Zurich Insurance Group.
  • Emmanuel Brule has been appointed as CRO Sompo International replacing Navid Zarinejad. He is the former CEO of Sanlam Pan Africa General Insurance.
 

EMEA

Ageon 

  • Damiaan Jacobovits de Szeged leaves his role of COO for Aegon International to join Aegon Asset Management as Chief Financial and Transformation Officer.

Allianz 

  • Claire-Marie Coste-Lepoutre and Oskar Buchauer essentially swap roles; Oskar Buchauer is announced as the new CFO at Allianz Global Corporate Specialty (AGCS) while the incumbent, Claire-Marie Coste Lepoutre will take over as Head of Allianz Group Actuarial, Planning & Controlling & Group Chief Actuary for Allianz Group.

AON

  • Paul Davies has stepped back from client service responsibility to take the role of Vice Chair. He served as the founder and CEO of AON Reinsurance and then Chairman of AON Re Worldwide.

  • James Fogarty is promoted to Global Head of Marine for AON's Reinsurance Solutions business. 

  • Allan Karlsen, CEO of AON Denmark, will assume the role of COO EMEA, while continuing as interim CEO for Aon Denmark and its subsidiaries. 

  • Jeff Plein has been named as COO for APAC, joining from CitiBank. He succeeds Bill Hooper, who has been named as Global COO for Commercial Risk Solutions. 

Aviva

  • Jason Storah is appointed CEO of UK & Ireland General Insurance. He most recently served as CEO of Aviva Canda.

  • This move come after Adam Winslow, previously CEO of UK & Ireland, moves to Direct Line as the firm's new CEO.

AXA  

  • Nancy Bewlay, previously CEO of AXA XL Reinsurance becomes CUO AXA Group. Renaud Guidée succeeds her as CEO of AXA XL Reinsurance.

  • Manuel Meier takes on the new role of Chief Client Officer for AXA XL, a newly created role. He most recently served as Chief Transformation Officer for AXA XL. 

  • Anthony Dagostino joins AXA XL in the newly created role of Global Chief Cyber Underwriting Officer, Commercial Lines. He joins from Converge, a cyber insurance and risk management provider which he founded.

  • Claudio Gienal is appointed as the Chief Transformation Officer for AXA European Markets and Health. His prior role, of CEO of UK and Ireland, is assumed by Tara Foley.  

  • Lucy Pilko joins AXA XL as CEO of Americas, leading the firm's operations in the USA, Canada and Bermuda. She joins from BCG, where she was Managing Director and Senior Partner, leading its North American Insurance practice across Commercial Lines, Personal Lines, Brokerage, Individual and Group Life and Reinsurance. She succeeds Joe Tocco, who is retiring. 

Hiscox  

  • Chris Loake has been appointed as the Group’s Chief Information Officer, leaving his prior role of Chief Technology & Operations Officer at C Hoare & Co.

  • Todd Isaac joins Hiscox as Group Chief Investment & Treasury Officer. He more recently worked for Monument Re, where he was Deputy Chief Investment Officer for Europe. 

MS Amlin 

  • Jessie Burrows is named as the incoming CFO for MS Amlin, starting in Q1 2024. She takes over from current CFO, Phil Green, who is retiring. She joins from Direct Line, where she was Managing Director of Customer Sales, Service and Claims.

Howden

  • Rowan Douglas has left his prior role at WTW of Head of the Climate and Resilience Hub (CRH) to join Howden as CEO Climate Risk and Resilience. Rowan Douglas was a co-founder of Artemis in the late 1990’s.

Swiss Re 

  • Jacques de Vaucleroy, currently interim Chairman of Swiss Re Group, will be proposed for election as Chairman at the next AGM in April 2024.

  • Ali Shahkarami has been appointed as Global Head of P&C Solutions, Swiss Re. In his new role, Shahkarami will lead a team of insurance and data experts based in Munich.

WTW 

  • Lucy Clarke will join WTW as President, Risk & Broking. Currently, she is the CEO of Marsh JLT Global Specialty. She takes over from Adam Garrad, who will become chair of the division.

Zurich  

  • Dirk De Nil, the current CEO of Zurich Benelux and Nordics, will become the Global Head of Zurich Resilience Solutions, effective October 1, 2023, succeeding Hanno Mijer, who is set to retire.

  • Liam Burrell has been named as Head of Commercial Insurance, Asia and CEO, Singapore. He has over 20 years of insurance industry experience.
