Matthias Oberholzer

Dr. Matthias Oberholzer leads the firm’s Europe, Middle East and Africa region and, until recently, headed its Swiss operations. Matthias focuses on advising national and international clients in the insurance, banking and private equity industries, specializing in the recruitment of CEO, board and top management positions. Recent work includes the successful recruitment of CEOs, CHROs, CMOs, COOs, Heads of Strategy and Regional CEOs for private banks and global insurance companies. He is based in Zurich.

Previous Experience

Prior to joining Russell Reynolds Associates, Matthias was with McKinsey & Company for eight years, as an Associate Principal serving insurance, banking and sports clients in Germany and Switzerland, as well as throughout Africa, Europe and North America. During his tenure, Matthias held leadership roles in the European and Swiss insurance practices and led knowledge development in the areas of claims management, underwriting, bancassurance, innovation and the Swiss insurance market. He also presented at industry conferences, taught training programs and was a key member of the Swiss recruiting team. Earlier, Matthias founded and sold several companies as an independent entrepreneur. He has published a book on product innovation in the P&C insurance industry and has authored a number of articles for industry publications.

Education & Affiliations

Matthias received his BA in business administration and his MBA in insurance economics from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. He also holds an MS in e-commerce from Carnegie Mellon University and a PhD in insurance economics from the University of Basel. Matthias is also a member of YPO.
