Nor are the skills required of a creative director limited to design. “The top creative directors have so much more responsibility than designing the collections,” said Robyn Soto, a consultant in the retail and luxury practice of Russell Reynolds Associates. “Brands don’t sell on the strength of their collections in isolation. They have a lot more to worry about than people imagine.”
The responsibilities of branding in a rapidly changing digital age — not necessarily the skills honed in fashion colleges 20 or 30 years ago — have put a new premium on youth and comfort in the digital space.
