Fundraising and dry powder in the infrastructure space may have hit record levels last year, but if recent hiring trends are any indication, the boom is far from over.
Infrastructure funds have benefited from investor demand for yield in a low interest rate environment, as the asset class is sometimes seen as a substitute for fixed income, according to Charlie Watson, a consultant at executive search firm Russell Reynolds Associates. Infrastructure funds raised a record $59 billion in 2016 as of December, according to data provider Preqin, pushing dry powder up to $137 billion, also a record.
