The expanding list of credentials for top-notch general counsel could be boosting total pay, says Cynthia Dow, who leads the global legal and compliance officers practice at Russell Reynolds Associates.

Leadership skills are critical to the roles, and the most successful general counsel tend to be decisive and able to cut through bureaucracy, according to a January 2016 report from Russell Reynolds Associates.

“[Firms seeking general counsel candidates] are now looking for a broader set of leadership skills … the ability to influence the organization broadly,” says Cynthia Dow, who leads the global legal and compliance officers practice at Russell Reynolds. “That then narrows the number of people who have the capability to be the very highly regarded, heavy-hitting GC to a smaller universe of people.”
