Preparing for the transition is important, according to a succession planning expert

In any organization, a CEO succession plan is important, according to Anthony Abbatiello, global head of leadership and succession consulting at consulting firm Russell Reynolds Associates.

For most organizations, succession planning starts three to five years before an expected departure, and should also continue at least a year into the new executives' appointment. Typically, Abbatiello says that it's worth casting a broader net than just one archetype, like a COO or head of business line.

"If we look at our data over time, CFOs and COOs have typically moved into the CEO job," said Abbatiello. "But what is more important than a typical profile is having clarity around what is actually required in that job. What are the capabilities, skills, traits, and behaviors of that leader? What is the environment that they're going to be swimming in every day? That's what's going to drive what the success is more than the typical profile."

This can look different for tech giants.

"[For CEOs at traditional tech firms] it really is about understanding the culture and, and driving the financial success of the organization... These are large organizations that have massive ecosystems and connections into other broader ecosystems."
