The makeup of jobs at fund shops is experiencing a “massive transition” as asset managers continue to transform, and many roles will not survive, recruiters and consultants say.

Although “some level of fear is probably warranted,” the industry will still need portfolio managers and strategists, even if providers increasingly rely on quantitative tools to create portfolios, says Deb Brown, a senior member of the Asset and Wealth Management Recruiting Practice at Russell Reynolds Associates. 

Since the industry has moved away from style-box investing, “understanding how a single asset class fits into diversified portfolio is helpful,” she says.
