Walter Friederichs

Walter leads the firm's global Automotive/Mobility Practice. He advises clients on getting their company's talent portfolio aligned with their overall business strategy and on transforming company culture to line up with the competitive context. He conducts worldwide searches and assessments for major industrial and retailing organizations as well as board assessments and searches for non-executive directors. He is also a core member of the firm's Digital Practice. In this context, he has authored articles on the changing profiles leaders need to have in order to be successful in the future, as well as on the organizational transformation that established businesses are facing.

Recent Client Experience

Walter's most recent activities in the automotive industry include attracting best-in-class know-how to the management board of an iconic brand and providing leading-edge know-how in UX design to a premium OEM. Currently, a typical requirement is the transfer of FMCG know-how in customer centricity and design thinking to industrial businesses and the change of retailing models. He has also helped to establish the executive management team for an Asian OEM's European headquarters.

Additionally, Walter participated in a major supplier's global initiative to attract state-of-the-art connectivity know-how. By attracting internationally-experienced talent to regional and global positions, he promoted step changes in the business contributions that HR executives make. Walter supported building a technology advisory board made up of renowned leaders from various industries and countries for a major supplier to guide the company's digitalization strategy. Walter's most recent leadership and assessment contribution had him supporting the CEO of a stand-alone industrial group to trigger momentum for change by adjusting communication and changing the composition of the managing board.

Previous Experience

Prior to joining the firm in 1996, Walter was the general manager of the strategic construction chemicals business unit at Hilti AG. Previously, he headed up corporate development at Hilti's headquarters in Liechtenstein. Before that, he was with BMW as the general manager of a holding company after having served as manager, technology transfer, at BMW's headquarters in Munich. Walter began his career as a consultant with the Boston Consulting Group in Düsseldorf.

Additional Professional Activities

Walter is a member of the British Automotive Fellowship International. In addition, he is a member of the Tönissteiner Kreis and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik, two associations encouraging international relations. He was also elected Young Leader of the American Council on Germany, Atlantik-Brücke, which fosters dialogue between American and German professionals.


Walter received his licence d'administration économique et sociale from the University of Aix-en-Provence in France and his Diplom-Kaufmann from the University of Cologne. As a Fulbright Scholar, he received his MBA from Pennsylvania State University and his PhD from the University of Cologne. Walter is fluent in German, English, and French.
