Unconscious bias also holds back women after they have been hired. Dee Symons, managing director at Russell Reynolds Associates, the executive search firm, says women tend to be evaluated on experience and men on potential, an area of unconscious bias that has held women back from being promoted to key senior positions.
“With women candidates, there are such phrases as ‘she didn’t have the gravitas’,” Ms Symons says. “Situations like that clearly demonstrate unconscious biases.”
