IT Function Commentary and Moves

Welcome to the 2014 issue of IOPener, in which we cover interesting moves within the technology function in many organisations around Europe. We are particularly pleased to include a commentary on the Retail Sector by Paul Coby, CIO of the UK-based multichannel department store John Lewis, which is the sister company to Waitrose, the top-end UK supermarket chain. The UK is the largest retail market in Europe and accounts for 34% of all online retail sales in those countries. In the first six months of 2014 online sales at John Lewis had grown by over 25% to £552m (€707m).

“Having lived through one IT Revolution—in the air transport industry—it’s fascinating living through the Retail Revolution. How we all shop has changed radically, and continues to change rapidly. Remember just 6 years ago, when it was so simple? Customers drove or took the bus to your shop, looked at an item, then paid you real folding money; you put the lamp or duvet in a bag and they actually took it home. These days we have many “customer journeys”, we may research products in store (e.g. a TV or mattress) but buy it online and have it delivered and installed, or we might research online for function and price and buy in store, or perhaps via reserve and collect. We may contact the “call centre” for advice, and so on and so on, and you might buy just online or, as traditionally, just in store.

These days almost one third of John Lewis revenue is generated online, and online buying (by which we mean where you pay online) is up over 20% compared to last year. The point here is not online growth but the growth of omni-channel.

But this is just the beginning. The use of smart phones and tablets is growing fast and ‘mobile’ is now over half our traffic. Digital innovation is set to further revolutionise the way we shop, with new products in the connected “IOT” home (smart lights, fridges, heating etc.), and in store we will have new ways to access wider ranges of products and receive message through iBeacons. So here comes the Digital Revolution.”
