Trends and Moves in the Telecoms Sector



As globalised market competition becomes ever more intense, rivalry that encompasses product quality, functionality, technology, price, service, and marketing is gradually coming to an end. The trend toward product design is becoming unstoppable. In the mobile market, it is pretty obvious that the future of feature phones is becoming smart phones. Both multinational and domestic consumer electronics companies are searching for the best talents globally for the development of smart devices. In the meantime, telecom companies are continuously hiring ‘cloud’ talents to strengthen their cloud teams. Non-profit industry associations of telecom service provider also tend to organise a cloud related council ad they are hiring cloud council chairs as well.

Telecom Telego (highlights July – September 2011)

Aircom

  • Aircom International has appointed Alwyn Welch as CEO. Aircom Chairman, John Hughes, who has been performing the role of acting CEO, will remain involved in day-to-day operations and transfer overall responsibility to Mr Welch over the coming weeks.

Alcatel-Lucent

  • Martin Sharrock has been appointed CTO ANZ.

Aruba Networks

  • Vincent Chiapazzo has been appointed Managing Director ANZ. He previously ran the Enterprise Mobility Business at Motorola and was instrumental in growing the Symbol/Motorola business in the ANZ region.

Astellia

  • Astellia has appointed Rajesh Sharma Vice President for sales and customer operations. Mr Sharma will lead all sales activities, operations and customer service to drive Astellia’s expansion into new markets and growth in its customer base.

Asia Satellite Telecommunications

  • Asia Satellite Telecommunications (AsiaSat) has appointed Ya-Hui Chiu as an advisor to the president and CEO of AsiaSat, following his retirement from the position of Vice President of technical operations last month. Mr Chiu joined AsiaSat in 1989. He played a role in all technical matters involving the launch of AsiaSat 1, AsiaSat 2, AsiaSat 3S, AsiaSat 4 and AsiaSat 5, as well as maintaining and operating the satellite fleet and interfacing with customers.

Basset

  • OSS/BSS solution provider Basset has strengthened its product management team with the appointment of Lotta Jonsson as Product Manager for modules.

Bharti Airtel

  • Bharti Airtel has appointed Rajiv Rajgopal CEO for broadband/data business and Shashi Arora CEO for DTH/ media services. Both Mr Rajgopal and Mr Arora will report to K Srinivas, President for consumer business at Bharti Airtel.

Blyk

  • Mobile messaging company Blyk has appointed Eric Kip Chief Executive Officer, replacing co-founder Pekka Ala- Pietilä, who will continue as Chairman. Mr Kip joined Blyk in 2009 and was previously Chief Commercial Officer. He has 20 years experience working with advertising in various executive media functions.

Bridge Alliance

  • Asian mobile alliance group Bridge Alliance has named Hui Weng Cheong as Chairman. Hui is currently CEO International of SingTel, responsible for the group’s overseas investments and relationships with overseas partners. He succeeds Lim Chuan Poh, who has been the Chairman since the inception of the Bridge Alliance in 2004. Mr Chuan Poh retired from SingTel at the end of 2010.

British Telecom

  • Eliza Kwok has joined BT as Managing Director of BT China. Ms Kwok will be tasked with expanding BT China’s portfolio of services for existing multinational customers, and winning new business in key sectors of the Chinese market. Before joining BT, Ms Kwok was Managing Director of International SOS in China.

Brocade

  • Brocade has appointed Gerald Penaflor Senior Regional Director for strategic accounts in Asia Pacific. Mr Penaflor joined Brocade in 2002 as Regional Business Development Manager and has been managing the overall business and regional market development for South East Asia, India, Australia and Korea over the last nine years.

Cable & Wireless

  • Bhupinder Singh has been appointed Country Manager for Cable & Wireless Worldwide’s Hong Kong operations. Based out of Hong Kong, he will hold this new position in addition to his current role as the vice president for delivery, Asia-Pacific.

China Telecom

  • China Telecom announced their President and Chief Operating Officer Shang Bin, has resigned to become a Vice Minister at China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Convergys

  • Convergys has appointed Maria Victoria “Ivic” Mueco as Country Manager for its customer management operations in the Philippines. Ms Mueco takes over from Marife Zamora, who is now the Managing Director for customer management operations in Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Equinix

  • Global data centre provider Equinix has named Alex Tam Managing Director for Greater China. Mr Tam will target growth and new business in Hong Kong and Shanghai, in segments including outsourcing, business continuity and cloud-based service delivery. Before joining Equinix, Mr Tam worked at BT as General Manager of data centres in Hong Kong, where he was responsible for establishing the company’s local data centre operation and for developing the data centre and IT outsourcing services strategy.

F5 networks

  • Alley Hiroshi has been appointed President / Country Manager of Japan. He was former President / Representative Director of Wipro Japan.

GSMA

  • The GSMA has appointed Anne Bouverot Director General and member of the GSMA Board. Ms Bouverot, who served most recently as Executive Vice President of mobile services for France Telecom Orange, assumed leadership of the GSMA in September.

Huawei

  • John Suffolk has been appointed Huawei’s first Global Cyber Security Officer. Before joining Huawei, Mr Suffolk was Chief Information Officer for the UK Government.
  • Huawei Australia has appointed John Brumby, Alexander Downer and John Lord Independent Directors on the company’s newly established board.
  • John Lord will act as Chairman of the board, which comprises the three independent Australian directors, alongside Huawei Australia CEO Guo Fulin, Huawei South Pacific President Jeff Liu, and two members from Huawei’s global board - Global Director Chen Lifang and Global Executive Eirector Li Jie.

Kirusa

  • Kirusa, a provider of mobile social media and value added services, has named Atanu Mandal Managing Director for India. Mr Mandal joins Kirusa from Unified Telecom where he was a Director. Prior to this, he was president at ACL Wireless, in charge of sales, service delivery, and product development.

MMA

  • The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) announced Hu Yanping and Tony Chen would co-chair the industry body’s China Local Council. Mr Yanping is founder and president of DCCI, and Mr Chen is Managing Director of interaction at GroupM China. As co-chairs, they will both guide and oversee the China Local Council and its industry initiatives.

NBN

  • Keiren Cooney has been appointed Chief Communications Officer responsible for marketing, advertising, government relations, consumer PR and corporate communications. Mr Cooney was most recently Chief Marketing Officer at Telecom New Zealand.

Nokia

  • Grant McBeath has been appointed Managing Director for Thailand and Emerging Asia. Most recently, Mr McBeath was Head of Sales Operations, Nokia South East Asia Pacific, based in Singapore.

Orange Business

  • Orange Business Services, the enterprise communications arm of France Telecom, has appointed Le Tuan General Manager of ASEAN. Mr Tuan will oversee the company’s operations in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand, in addition to his role as Asia Pacific Director of Channels. Before he joined Orange in 2009, Mr Tuan was General Manager of F5 Networks responsible for sales in Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam. His career also includes nine years in Microsoft in sales and management positions.

Primus

  • Tom Mazerski has replaced Ravi Bhatia who retired as Chief Executive of the Australian telco. Mr Mazerski is President of Retail and Networking Services for the company’s global parent Primus Telecommunications Group. Alongside his role for Australia, he will be the Chief Marketing Officer for the global group.

Roamware

  • Roamware has appointed Neil Laird Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Mr Laird has over 25 years experience in global technologies companies including Sum Total Systems, Docent and ADAC Laboratories.

Sony Ericsson

  • John Featherstone has been appointed Managing Director, Oceania. He was previously Country Manager ANZ at SanDisk.

Telecom New Zealand

  • Paul Reynolds announced his departure from the telco, and is expected to leave by the end of the year. Mr Reynolds is credited with the transformation of TNZ and will hand over the reins to a new CEO after five years in the role. Mr Reynolds was previously CEO of BT Wholesale in the UK.

Telekom Malaysia

  • Telekom Malaysia (TM) has named Azizi Hadi Executive Vice President of its small to medium enterprise (SME) segment. In his new role, Mr Hadi will oversee all aspects of TM SME’s operations in fulfilling its aspiration to capture SMEs business in Malaysia.

Telstra

  • Tracey Gavegan has been appointed Group Managing Director, Human Resources having acted in the role since March.
  • Inese Kingsmill has joined as Director of Business Unit Marketing and Communications. Ms Kingsmill was previously Microsoft’s Director of Strategy, Marketing and Programs.
  • Telstra has announced Chief Financial Officer and board member John Stanhope will retire at the end of the year after spending over 40 years with the Australian incumbent carrier.
  • Chantal Walker former Director of Brands, Advertising and Digital at Telstra, has joined Foxtel as Chief Marketing Officer.
  • Telstra International has appointed Andrew Wildblood Head of North Asia to lead sales strategy and activities in China, Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan.

Thaicom

  • Thaicom has appointed Suphajee Suthumpun Chief Executive Officer of the Thailand-base satellite operator.

TM Forum

  • Tony Kerrison is taking on the chairmanship of the TM Forum’s enterprise cloud leadership council (ECLC). Mr Kerrison is Chief Technology Officer and Head of Infrastructure Services of ING, leading the development, delivery, and management of the global financial institution’s IT infrastructure and data centre strategy.
