SoftWhere Europe—February 2009

Industry Trends, Moves & Profiles
Trends and Moves in the Software Sector

SoftWhere Europe is a list of the major executive promotions in the software industry, compiled by Russell Reynolds Associates. The executive appointments listed are in some cases, but not all, associated with Russell Reynolds Associates’ searches. We have had a number of requests for SoftWhere Europe over the last few months and are pleased to distribute this version. We would be grateful for more feedback on the structure and content of the publication.

Second-time CEOs—A Positive Indicator

Regular readers will know about our interest in seeing the European software industry expand and prosper. One interesting dynamic within the industry is the number of CEOs of major software businesses who are in their first CEO role. When we first analysed the top 50 European software companies in 2005, every one had a first-time CEO. Being a first-time CEO itself is not a bad thing when you consider the global success of Bill Gates, Larry Ellison and on a European basis Henning Kagermann, Paul Walker, Bernard Liautaud, Mike Lynch etc etc. However, having some second or third-time CEOs within the industry is also an advantage as it brings in more experience. Examples of second-time CEOs of European software businesses include Mike Lawrie at Misys (former CEO Siebel Systems), Stephen Kelly at Micro Focus (former CEO Chordiant), Carl Bish at Dicom (former CEO Unibase systems), Marco Tripi at Almaviva (former CEO Cos group), Bertrand Sciard at Aldata (former CEO Intentia) and Mike Shinya at IBS (former CEO Sherwood). Around ten of the top 50 European businesses (using the Truffle 100 at www.truffle.com) now have a second-time CEO. We see this as a positive sign of additional strength and capability within the industry.
